Brief Therapy

What is Brief Therapy?

Our Brief Therapy approach is designed for individuals, couples, and families who are experiencing moderate-to-heavy mental health or relationship challenges, and are motivated to see significant improvement within 2 – 10 sessions.

Brief Therapy is an established and rapidly-growing approach to improving mental, emotional, and relationship health, and is backed by a large base of evidence.

Intermind Employs These Brief Therapy Models for Our Clients.

Brief Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT-B)

IPT-B addresses relationship issues. Through dialogue and role play, it helps you improve your interpersonal communication and relationship building skills. In doing so, it increases your sense of belonging while reducing depressive symptoms.

Chairwork Psychotherapy

Chairwork allows you to engage with different aspects of yourself or with others in a structured manner. Using chairs to represent different perspectives or voices, it facilitates deeper self-exploration, and helps you to resolve internal conflicts and develop a healthy self-view..

Focused Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (FACT)

FACT guides you to embrace your thoughts and feelings rather than fighting against them. Through mindful action and clarifying your values, it supports you in building a rich and meaningful life while handling painful experiences.

Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET)

MET supports you in mobilising your internal resources for change. It rapidly identifies and leverages your intrinsic motivations, helping you to initiate and commit to a personalized plan, fostering positive changes.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing helps you identify your goals and reasons for change. The method then helps you overcome ambivalence, sharpen your intrinsic motivators, and develop a plan of action.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

SFBT encourages you to envisage the future you desire and identify the steps to achieve it. Focusing on solutions rather than problems, it helps you leverage your existing strengths and resources, fostering swift and sustainable change.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ): Brief Therapy

Brief Therapy is a three-step process. Prior to the initial session, our clients answer questions that relate to their challenges, and provide information about themselves. The second step involves setting up therapy sessions ranging from 60 – 105 minutes. Finally, we email or SMS our clients 2-4 days after each session to explore the insights formed post-session and jointly decide on the next best steps.

Yes, Brief Therapy has a very large base of evidence regarding its clinical effectiveness. You can see that evidence here.

Brief Therapy could be right for you if you satisfy the following:

  • Your strong preference is to have less than 5 therapy sessions
  • You are unable (or unwilling) to have more than 10 therapy sessions
  • You are experiencing a moderate-to-significant mental health or relationship challenge
  • You have clear goals in mind
  • You are comfortable with the potential emotional intensity of Brief Therapy models
  • You are willing to collaborate closely with the Intermind therapist

There are no risks associated with choosing Brief Therapy. After 2-3 sessions, we will have a highly-informed opinion on the number of sessions you will need to experience significant improvement in your mental health or relationship challenge. We will call you to discuss our findings and estimated treatment duration, which may include Progressive Therapy.

Due to the limited time nature of Brief Therapy, we use evidence-based psychotherapy models that are designed to produce improvements for our clients within 2-10 sessions.  The nature of some of these interventions can be emotionally taxing for some clients. We support our clients through this experience with frequent session pauses, or by using models that are less taxing, or by discontinuing Brief Therapy and recommending Progressive Therapy.
