Challenges for Couples

Relationship problems affect most couples. In some cases, these problems can become so significant that a trusted partner is required to support the couple.

Below you will find the key couples-based challenges that we work with at Intermind.

Communication Issues

One of the most common problems that couples experience is poor communication. This can manifest in a variety of ways, such as not expressing feelings or needs effectively, not listening to one another, or avoiding difficult conversations. Additionally, misunderstandings and assumptions can also cause communication problems in relationships.

Differences in Interests and Priorities

Another common issue in relationships is having different priorities, goals, and interests. For example, one partner may prioritise career success while the other prioritises spending more time together as a couple. When partners have different values and goals, it can lead to tension and conflict in the relationship.

Extended Family Influence

Extended family influences, including from in-laws, parents, and siblings, can significantly affect couples, sometimes leading to discord and misunderstandings. The multiple perspectives can create a strain, where couples find themselves caught between pleasing their extended family and prioritising their own needs. This can breed resentment and conflict.

Financial Issues

Financial issues can also be a significant source of stress and conflict in relationships. Disagreements over spending habits, paying bills, or saving for the future can cause tension and frustration in a relationship. Financial issues can also stem from larger problems such as differences in priorities and goals, or a lack of trust.

Infidelity and Trust Issues

Infidelity and trust issues can be a common problem in relationships. Infidelity can take many forms, including physical or emotional infidelity, and can cause significant harm to the relationship. Additionally, other trust issues such as dishonesty, keeping secrets, or breaking promises can also lead to relationship problems. When trust is broken, it can be difficult to repair and may result in relationship breakdown.

Intimacy and Sexual Issues

Intimacy and sexual issues can also be a common problem in relationships. This may include issues with desire, sexual compatibility, or difficulty resolving sexual problems. In some cases, intimacy and sexual problems may stem from other underlying issues such as communication problems or relationship dissatisfaction.

Parenting Style Conflict

Differences in parenting styles can create a significant source of conflict among couples. Divergent views on discipline, educational approaches, and values can lead to misunderstandings and resentment. Couples can have deep-seated beliefs about the “right” way to parent, often rooted in their own upbringing. When not addressed constructively, these conflicts can escalate, causing emotional distance and persistent arguments.

Power Imbalance and Control Issues

Power imbalances and control issues can arise in relationships when one partner tries to control or manipulate the other. This can manifest in various forms, such as controlling behavior, verbal abuse, or emotional manipulation. Power imbalances can cause significant harm to a relationship and can lead to a breakdown in trust and communication.
